The Island

june 29 – July 3, Ages 11 – 13

Traveling by canoe and exploring a wild island on Lake Champlain

Activity Level: Introductory.

Valcour, The Island of the Pines, is a large, protected island in the northern part of Lake Champlain. This 1000-acre treasure, with its many coves, has seen the birch bark canoes of indigenous fishermen and was the site of the famous Revolutionary War battle of Valcour and the 1810 battle of Plattsburg. Its dark forests and limestone bluffs hold much mystery of the past and a great adventure for our times. We will reach the island by canoeing across the lake. Depending on the wind direction, we may choose a 4-mile approach from Plattsburg or a one-mile approach from the closer shore. We will set camp in a secluded cove with views of the Green Mountain, and a pebble beach, great for skipping stones. Ahead of us are 3 days of exploring by foot and canoe, jumping off cliffs, swimming, caving, and navigation games. We will watch the sun rising over Mount Mansfield and setting over the Adirondacks while enjoying the nomadic life of island explorers. On the way home, we will cross Lake Champlain by way of ferry.
